There's lots to update! I'll start with days 6-17 of the 30 day draw challenge.

Day 6- What you want to be "when you grow up"

Day 9- Favorite food.

Days 10 & 11 I skipped.
Day 12- Something from a fairytale.

Day 13- Make yourself into a superhero.

Day 14- A poster for an existing movie.

Day 17- Something that scares you.

Some of these are just completely awful, I know, but that's part of the project, I guess. Accepting that sometimes your work sucks.

Next up- some portraits. I'm working on updating my portrait portfolio.

The last one here is one of my first attempts to use Adobe Illustrator. It's all very foreign to me.

Day 3 of the 30 day drawing challenge was to draw a friend:

Day 4 was to draw something you miss. I was without my computer for the day (she's sick), so I did this very crappy doodle of my computer on my iphone:

Day 5 of the challenge is today, and the group's work wont be posted for another 8 hours, but here's my submission, plus an extra because I couldn't make a decision for the topic of "favorite animated character". These are my versions of Jane Lane from Daria and Louise from Bob's Burgers.

This piece had to be moved at the venue where it's being shown because people were complaining. At first I kind of just snickered, but the more I think about it, the more I want to paint some sweaty, rosy, glistening fleshy bits on enormous canvases. I cannot understand the frame of mind that would find something like this offensive. It makes me want to curiously poke around in people's brains with my paintbrush.

This is my new favorite pre-painting exercise. I pause the TV (thank goodness for DVR) at random moments and give myself 30 seconds to draw whatever's on the screen. The coloring is just for fun.

I understand these things aren't everyone's cup of tea. They're certainly not mine. I like to go to look at the work, but once I've done that, there's a period of awkward mingling that takes place. That part keeps me from going to many of these things. But, I hope you'll come by and take a peek. I wont be offended if anyone just runs through and then jets. I just want to see some friendly faces and share my paint-babies and some food and wine and music. There are several new pieces that no one has seen yet. It'll be grand.

Lately I've been drawing on much larger paper than I'm used to, and for some reason this has made me much more prone to screw up proportions. A couple days ago I did a couple of ridiculously bad pastel drawings. With one of them I decided to try to perform surgery on it to fix the proportions. It's still not a very good drawing, but it was fun to use a layover of the reference photo to see where my problem areas were.

Gesture Drawings

Gesture drawings are quick (usually a minute or less) drawings meant to capture the entire subject and energy of a pose, instead of focusing on small details or proper proportions. I use gesture often to either loosen up before drawing or as the beginning of a longer drawing. Today in my figure drawing class we focused entirely on gesture drawings and did some crazy variations of the exercise.

I'm not sure if I learned anything with the crazy variations of gesture drawings, but I had fun and made a mess, and sometimes that's all art has to be about.

According to my stat counter, it seems a lot of people end up here after searching "How to draw Flapjack Characters". And, since I hate to disappoint, I decided to go ahead and make a little Flapjack tutorial.

First, let me get this out of the way:
Flapjack is © Cartoon Network. I am in no way affiliated with them. I'm just a fan.

So, you will need paper, a pencil, an eraser and an ink pen. The colored parts of the tutorial are for pencil work, black is for ink.

I promised Lidya I'd draw her quite a long time ago. And I did, several times, but occasionally I find a face that I just can't capture the character of. I think I finally did a fairly good job on the resemblance, although I purposely left it a little impressionistic as to not screw it up. And that hand (it's a hand, I swear) was an impossible angle. I tried.

Remember these things? They're popular little origami projects used by kids as a cootie-catching game or a fortune telling device. I had a fun time the other day trying to recall how they were made and decorating the fruits of my labor. Turned upside-down they make for a cute 4-pocket organizer for small things like pushpins, paperclips, and Barbie shoes.

I spent yesterday wandering around the outlets collecting inspiration. I think clothes are an art form of sorts. Each outfit is an exercise in balancing colors and textures. It's like collage with the body as a canvas. I don't necessarily follow trends for myself, but I like to see what's popular each season in the shops. Right now there's a lot of really bright, bold, graphic floral patterns out there. Also, Pac Sun is pushing plaids right now...in the summer.
